Sending my heartfelt condolences to all the family. James was a man of strong character, was liked by many, and professional to the last. He will be greatly missed by all who knew and loved him. I hope happy memories will help ease the pain at this sad time.
What can I say about James other than the last 15 years have been a complete joy to be his PA. There was never a dull moment, there were many funny moments, even more inappropriate jokes but above all many kind moments. My family and I are truly grateful for having known him and I am thankful for all the experiences, memories and laughter he provided. He fought his battle as a true soldier but a soldier with a very soft heart. I hope my small donation will go some way to honour his memory.
Forever in our hearts. The best person to work for with a huge caring heart. Slightly inappropriate especially when he used to greet me in the office in the mornings. Always looked out for other people. We shall never forget the beautiful flowers he sent when I had my episode in hospital earlier this year. He will never be forgotten. His words and pictures which he used to draw will take pride of place in our home. God bless his soul. Rest in peace JSB. Much Love. Andy & Nina Smith xxxx
The loss of a generous lovely man.
James was truly a modern Renaissance Man: farmer, soldier, artist, and most of all a brilliant lawyer. He will be sadly missed by huge numbers of people in many walks of life. it was a privilege to have known and worked with James.
My deepest condolences go to Cilla and the family.
Reading Sarah’s and Maria’s messages confirms my recollections that James, my partner for over 30 years , regarded his service of excellence to his clients and the support of all his staff as of paramount importance . He had a razor sharp brain and was a brilliant advocate . He was a larger than life personality and everyone would know when he arrived in their office with his booming voice . I could say more but I am so sad that his full life was cut short at what in these days is a young age
No words can describe how sorry we all are for your loss and how unfair life can be. James was
a larger than life character who enjoyed sharing a joke with us on many occasions. His presence
will be deeply missed.
My heartfelt condolences go out to all the family. It was an honour to have known such a great person.
He will live on in our memories forever.
I was deeply saddened to hear of James’ death and I would like to extend my deepest condolences on behalf of the board of Directors at Trant Engineering Limited.
James has supported our business for many years, during which he established a close association, becoming well known to my senior management. He was highly respected and his direct and positive approach left a lasting impression on those that had the good fortune to meet him. I would like to pass these sentiments on to his family. He will be missed by many people.
RIP James, a man of many talents with a big heart.
Much love and condolences to Scilla, Andrew and Nick xxx
James has been a part of my working life for the past 37 years when I joined Humphries Kirk. He quickly made a lasting impression upon me and his drive and enthusiasm in all things, as well as his support, influenced my decision to remain with the firm for so many years. He was an inspiration, great fun, at times annoying, but with such boisterous charm. His passing leaves a huge hole but a lot of great memories. I shall miss him greatly. With deepest sympathy to Scilla and the family.
I completed my training contract at Humphries Kirk and then worked with James for some years after. I will never forget his presence, his booming voice and sense of humour! He was such a character. He was a brilliant lawyer and formidable opponent. It was a real privilege to have known James. Sending love and my deepest condolences to his family. xxx
James truly was a wonderful colleague, boss, teacher and inspiration. I was very fortunate to work as James’ assistant and its thanks to him that I have become the solicitor I am today. He was always giving guidance and help with my work and my studies and even created a mock trial so I could practice for my advocacy exam . He was so kind and had a wonderful sense of humour. He had a drive which was second to none and he was a formidable lawyer. A man of great honour and of many talents. He will be greatly missed. Rest in peace and my sincere condolences to his family.
James’ huge, warming personality filled perhaps the biggest wellingtons I have ever seen, and we will all miss them, so much, marching about Slepe. This is a huge loss to Dorset that will be felt across the country let there be no doubt. Wishing all the family considerable strength whilst we all mourn the loss of a huge life, so filled with laughter, culture, passion, family value, happiness and generosity.
All staff and Partners at Humphries Kirk are deeply saddened at the news and hope that James can now rest in peace.
Our thoughts and prayers are with James’ family and friends at this difficult time.
With best wishes from all at Humphries Kirk
Miss you Jamie

Mariane and I are so sorry to hear that James has been called to his rest. He was the most courteous host, inspirational commanding officer and enhancer of life’s joy.
Our sincere condolences from Durban to Priscilla, Andrew and Nick.
So deeply saddened to hear of the loss of James. Inspiring, wonderfully brilliant, hilarious and kind. What a great loss to society.
It was an absolute honour to have worked for James – the memories still make me laugh now. Truly one of a kind ❤️
James was such a huge inspiration to me in so many ways. To me he epitomised the ‘stiff upper lip old school British ‘ type of character that we would have seen saving the country in the days of Churchill and alike. We sometimes spoke about our time in the TA forces and it was easily to imagine him leading the troops into battle. His sometimes brisk and very frank manner only served to bolster the character that he was and you couldn’t help but admire him all the more for it. I admired him tremendously and he inspired me so much with his drive and his passion and the sheer amount he was able to accomplish. In times gone by if I was feeling browbeaten by life I would recall him to mind and my vigour was instantly restored. I spoke to James in October of last year when he kindly agreed to give me a character reference upon my joining of the voluntary division of the Police force. Little did I know that our phone conversation took place while he was in his hospital bed which I think is so typical of him – he never gave up or gave in. I will forever remember him; lawyer, mentor, friend and soldier to the last…
I worked and lived with Dodo,Chipps,Jamie and Bruce way back. As a New Zealander they were like another family to me. Jamie had started dating Pricilla when I left to do some more travel.
He was an amazing person and always kind and considerate I am so sorry to learn of his passing.
I am now in Australia but often think of the Selby- Bennetts. My sincere condolences and thoughts to you all.
