John contributed a lot to the Jazz Club and the Festival and we were very sad when he could no longer participate.
I have many happy memories of John, but specially the times spent round his and Liz’s kitchen table with tea and cake (and often various whiskies), comparing notes on the tapes and CDs sent to me by musicians keen to play at the Jazz festival. We had fairly similar tastes overall, though he tended to draw the line at more advanced bands. But he also surprised me at times by arguing for a band or musician who I had been unimpressed by, who I went on to book and found that live they were very much worth the gig.
