I knew Joy for hardly any time at all, having only met her last year to write an article about ‘The Lichen Lady of Studland’, but she made a lasting impression not only with her deep and hard-earned knowledge, but with her indomitable spirit, her lively humour and overall sense of goodness. I shall miss not being able to get to know her better, but am forever grateful for knowing her at all. Rest well, in peace.
Joy was a one off! Knowledgeable, caring, determined and a real character. She was part of a church party to Iona some years ago and before long she was leading walks along the sea shore identifying wild plants, lichen and so on and giving lectures. She wrote superb poetry and was a valuable member of our Purbeck Village Quire where she sang alto and she had perfect pitch . She will be missed!
Joy was such a friendly and Eco-knowledgeable person, and it was a pleasure to get to know her over the years as we sat next to each other as altos in The Purbeck Village Quire. I had a lovely and lively conversation with her only a week before she died, and she was adamant we should all be taking large quantities of vitamin C to ward off the Covid virus. The world is a richer place for having characters such as Joy and she and her quirkiness will be sadly missed.
