Messages of condolence

  1. Thinking of you all at this very sad time. Nigel was one of the best always very helpful, easy going and a great guy to work with. I’ve known Nigel coming up 38 years from TVS days and he hasn’t changed a bit in all those years. In recent years Nigel has been very helpful in improving my golf skills which I will sadly miss.
    RIP Nigel.

    Andy Barbieri
  2. Nigel was a much liked and respected colleague and friend. I have always enjoyed working with Nigel for his attention to detail and commitment to doing everything to the best of his ability. We played many rounds of golf together and spent many hours dissecting how we played over a coffee normally coming to the conclusion that we were rubbish. I looked forward to our annual golf holiday together and it just won’t be the same without Nigel there. I miss you Nigel and I send my condolences to your family. Please know Nigel was a much loved friend. Sleep well my friend…

    Trevor Starr
  3. My deepest condolences for your loss. I’m reasonably new to the Sky Chilworth family, but Nigel was such a knowledgeable and friendly guy that I quickly learnt to rely on him for technical advice and interesting conversation. We frequently had lunch together or I’d seek him out, usually hiding in the wiring workshop, to get his take on the issue of the day. He always made time to help and did so with a smile and good humour. His passing was a complete shock and he’ll be sorely missed by everyone on site. Wishing you all the best as you adjust to your unimaginable loss – we’re all thinking of you.

    Paul Bourne
  4. It is with a heavy heart that i remember Nigel. whose presence brought light and warmth to my days here at Chilworth. His kindness, humor and unwavering dedication to his role. I will miss, seeing his smile around site. Sleep well Nigel.

  5. I didn’t know Nigel outside of Sky but, I was lucky enough to work with him on many occasions during my time at Sky. I liked Nigel, he was a good bloke with a healthy cynicism that I felt, in him, was a positive trait. He wasn’t afraid to question details, because, he cared and wanted to deliver to the best of his ability. He wanted to do things the right way. I always enjoyed our conversations about work and everything else. Very knowledgeable, he was always available to assist with technical questions and was always keen to share. I will miss Nigel’s late Friday calls to talk about BCUV, Dataminer or more lately VIPE.

Thank you Nigel, I will miss you.

  6. Nigel was a very intelligent guy , sometimes too intelligent , I can’t believe the amount of facts and figures that he could store in his head , recalling every memory as if it was yesterday , I don’t think that there was a single song that he didn’t know the lyrics to . We had a lot of laughs debating songs singers and don’t get me started on golf rules and regulations , but I have to agree with him , he always right , well usually .
A great deal of questions, crazy and otherwise will remain unanswered now.
Nigel was a professional and a perfectionist and I was proud to work along side him , and call him friend.
Things will not be the same Nigel , you were a one off and everything is mondain without you .
I’ll be thinking of you .
    Cheers !

    Kean Mark Wyatt
  7. Deepest sympathy to Nigel’s family and friends. It is just so desperately sad and Nigel has been taken far too young. I met Nigel 35 years ago at TVS. Fun days working in television with the whole technical department feeling more like a close family rather than colleagues. My husband also worked with Nigel for many years and we all became very close friends. We will miss our frequent get togethers summer BBQs, roast dinners and the wonderful conversations and fun. I know our boys also loved catching up. We loved the times Nigel would host with his deluxe hostess trolley. He was a great cook. Nigel was a fantastic engineer. The broadcasting world has lost a technical genius. We will miss you at our next planned catch up with Rob and family on 14 December. We will raise a glass to our dear friend. RIP Nigel

    Natalie Woolston
  8. I have fond memories of Nigel starting in 1986 when I first met him.
I am so shocked and saddened by his passing, far too soon.

  10. Nigel, a dear friend since schoolboy days. The intelligent, sensible one, who knew everything about most things. It brings a smile to my face when I reminisce about the antics we got up to during our younger years. Such an unexpected & tragic loss. You were taken far too soon. Much love to your family & friends. Farewell old friend. Ges

  12. Nigel was a lovely chap and a brilliant engineer we worked together for many years at Meridian TV and he was a big part of that team.
and we Played golf together many times his knowledge of the golf rules was as good as his digital Television knowledge , What a loss he will be sadly missed by his family and friends

  13. My condolences to Nigel’s family. It won’t be the same without him here to wind up by asking for the impossible or ridiculous. You could always tell though, that he gave even the craziest idea a little consideration before upping me in the crazy stakes. I’ll miss that, and the fight for the coffee machine. Rest well Nigel, see you in the next realm.

    Jody
  14. I am so sorry for your loss and am thinking of your family at this difficult time. I have worked with Nigel for many years at Chilworth and it is a great loss to me and the team here. He was so kind and helpful and always made time. He has immense technical knowledge and always looked for the best engineering solution, we had many discussions about saving project budget! Nigel, I will miss you greatly RIP.

  15. How do you squeeze fifty years of friendship and memories into a few words on a page? Nigel, you had an unstoppable competitive streak. Whether we were playing squash, skateboarding, skiing, backgammon, or golf, you always played to win and always by the rules. We’d spend hours practicing juggling and cycling the Jurassic coast on weekends with our friends.
Saturday mornings, watching Thunderbirds on the TV and Saturday nights clubbing, always finding ourselves standing in a kebab takeaway at the end of the night. The debates over music and films, burger nights, bowling, and so many more—memories I will treasure.

Nigel, you were more than just a great friend, approaching life and your career with the same determination you brought to every game we played. A man who, deep down, had a big heart, was generous, and always chose to focus on what mattered most: family and friends.

Losing Nigel has left a hole that will never truly be filled, but I’ll carry his laughter, determination, our stories, and kindness with me forever.

Nigel you could fix anything, If only we could’ve fixed you.

Rest easy, my friend—I hope there’s a heavenly golf course where you still win, by the rules, of course.

    Simon Ring
  16. Where do I start with a 57yr friendship?
Some would say that’s a lifetime but with just 62yrs on the clock we were all hoping for more,as one of a small group of school friends we all thought we be retired sitting on a park bench putting the world to rights and recalling our youth………skateboarding, wine women and song & should we need to get his attention we just yell “NIGEL” that infamous scream his mum would make whenever we called round for him lol
If you ever needed to know about anything Nigel was man there was nothing this man couldn’t do, he was our own personal tech support albeit to in depth at times………..eerrr Nigel you’ve lost me !
Still can’t believe we are never going to have these conversations again or share a session out on the skateboard, who would have thought as senior citizens we be still acting out our youth so proud to call you a life long friend, RIP … well don’t rest to much make sure it’s all set up for more good times when we all get to join you 🙂
    “NIGEL”

    Lawrence Toogood
  17. Nigel – as Simon has said, how do you condense around 40 years of friendship in just a few words. Well, here goes. From the first time you landed at the IBA all those years ago we knew you were special, what I noticed first was that infectious laughter of yours – unlike anything else I had heard before. You came across as a jack the lad but you had the most kind heart. We had so much fun over the years – many crazy evenings with friends, spent in fancy dress trying to solve a murder mystery whilst getting slowly slaughtered. Trying to teach me how to juggle -impossible. Encouraging me to get back to exercise after a knee operation. Great rides on your motorbike – with me shouting “go faster Nigel!”. I was proud to have you as an usher at my wedding – an opportunity for you to show your deeply caring side. You loved your family and spoke of them with great affection. Nigel – you are truly loved and we will never forget you.

    Anne Parsons
  18. My heartfelt condolences go out to all the family at this terribly sad time . I have known Nigel for 34 years and have many happy memories. He has a mischievous streak and a big heart , I can still hear his laugh in my head . He was very competitive and that came to the front at the Xmas parties we had at a friends house which always ended in huge laughs .
Going punting in Oxford for his Birthday although he spent a lot of the time in the water rather than on the water … he may have been trying to impress the boat next to us with a group of young women!
Nigel also had a need for speed whether it was his red Mazda sports car or motor bike or the ski slopes he was your genuine action man , a man with a huge heart .
Nigel I am still finding it hard to know you are not here but you are now on your next journey where in time we shall all meet again .

  19. I had the pleasure of knowing Nigel through work at Sky in Chilworth. Although we didn’t work together directly, he would often stop for a friendly chat when we crossed paths or were waiting in the queue for the coffee machine or for our tea to brew. He was always warm, friendly, and wore a smile that brightened your day. Nigel will be truly missed at Chilworth. Please accept my deepest condolences for your loss.

  20. Our time began 21 years ago at my friends Janes wedding. I walked past a dark haired good looking man in a suit, he gave me a cheeky wink. Months later Jane and Simon set us up for dinner.

Well, a really fun night became the start of our life together. We setup home and then welcomed our beautiful daughter Evelyn to make us a family.

Evelyn and Nigel enjoyed pool time together, they would spend hours in it entertaining eachother, he would launch her into the air and catch her, both with big grins on their faces. He was always the naughty one, sneaking Evie in the hotel next door so she could use the pool slides.

Nigel loved the snow and was always the first one wanting to go out in it. He would hunt the area for the best slopes and he and Evie would enjoy the runs. Nigels competitive nature would always drive him, he would build the best snowman he could, to out do ours.

Evie and I will hold our fun, happy memories of our short time with you deep in our hearts forever.

Thank you for our precious daughter, I promise I will love , cherish and protect her for the both of us, sleep well.

    Bec x

  21. Our thoughts are very much with you all at this very sad time.
We’d both known Nigel for about 25 years. I (Kim) met Nigel at ITV Meridian, when I got my first job in broadcasting. It was a technical role and one I initially really struggled with! Nigel helped me on many occasion, his technical knowledge was exceptional and he never made anyone feel stupid.
During my time at Meridian my husband Paul also got to know Nigel and when he met Bec we enjoyed get togethers in and outside of work..
We sadly lost touch when we relocated to Surrey in 2003 and it wasn’t until fairly recently that I saw Nigel again by chance when I was working at Sky’s Chilworth site. He hadn’t changed a bit. He spoke incredibly fondly of Evie, whom he was obviously so proud of and we’re hugely sad that their time together has been cut so short.
Nigel’s passing has been a huge shock. He was taken far too soon and he really will be missed by so many. Sleep well my friend x

  22. My condolences to all of Nigel’s family at this difficult time.

Having first met Nigel at Meridian over 20 years ago, it was a lovely surprise when our paths crossed again at Sky Chilworth. Nigel was a meticulous Project Engineer and designer, always striving for the best and most professional outcome for our team in Playout. He was always cheerful, often popped by for a chat and enjoyed winding us all up, which brightened our day.

    Nigel will be greatly missed.

    Andrew Hoskins
  23. Nigel was a great mate and working colleague, always happy to help whenever there was something I didn’t understand (which was sometimes quite often. I’ll miss him.

    Nick Barrett, Southern/TVS/Meridian
  24. My sincerest and deepest sympathies for your loss. Nigel will be forever remembered by his friends and colleagues all across Sky and especially those who know him well and have been close to him in Chilworth. Personally, I will miss him and our all too few occasions in the week to catch up – without fail the subject of our chats would inevitably move on from work to his latest golf endeavours from the weekend, the best slopes that I should consider for skiing and snowboarding holidays with my family or maybe just what our kids are upto! He was always about the people… Those are the memories that I will cherish… RIP Nigel

    Chris King
  25. I checked and found I had known Nigel for 36 years since he joined TVS VTR on 20/06/1988. He moved on with me to ITV Meridian and then our paths parted until he joined Sky at Chilworth. Always good to be around even if we did enjoy winding each other up on many occasions and he was always good at his job. It’s so sad he no longer around but we’ll always have the memories. Rest well, Nigel.

    David King
  26. I had the pleasure of working with Nigel at Crawley Court for the IBA. He worked in the Quality Control department while I was in their Technical Facilities. Nigel demonstrated his technical innovation ability by modifying a VHS tape recorder to play it’s tape from start to finish then rewind and play again and do it again and again. A very useful facility when we were putting new local radio statios on air before their services began so they had music to play during their test commissioning.
I seem to remember he had the first car I had ever seen with a rotary Wankel engine though I don’t remember if it lasted well or not. He was definitely a lover of technology. I was always impressed with his ability to learn to drive the first slo-mo systems brought into Meridian for instant replays, clever chap.
He was always very friendlly and had a very pleasant nature and was easy to work with. Though I didn’t see him in recent years since we all left Meridian, I was very sad to hear of his demise, he was taken too early, a great shame.
My sincere condolences to his family, I am sure they will have many pleasant memories to console themselves. Love and very best wishes.

    Wayne Kilby
  27. Where do you start?
    You don’t, it stopped.
It should never have stopped, it’s just not right.
    Nigel, we will miss you.
If you can hear this, I want to thank you. Thank you for all the laughs, all the technical knowledge & all those other parts of you that made you one of the gang.
My most outstanding memory of you, at the age of 15 was when you asked me to help calibrate your project in our electronics course. I’d spent months making this butchered piece of electronic circuit board crap, that never worked, and you walked in with a short wave radio!
I also want to thank you my friend for stepping up to be best man all those years ago, a brilliant speech very well delivered!
I regret I didn’t see you as much in the last few years, but you always remained firmly one of the gang.
As Lawrence has said, it should’ve been old men reminiscing of mis-spent youth in the autumn of our years, on a leafy park bench; memories of riding motorbikes, the tales of the opposite sex and all the other exploits we got up to.
Rest in peace Nigel, keep a seat for the gang in a nice spot.

    Steve Alford
  28. My sincere condolences for Nigel’s premature passing. I have fond memories of working with and learning from him at Meridian. May he rest peacefully.
With kindest wishes to Nigel’s family and closest friends.

  31. Wher to start?
I have know Nige for as long as I have worked in TV which is over 30 years now, he and Jez introduced me to lunchtime drinking on my first day so I realised early on, that choosing a career that was better than working for a living was a good move. We had fun at Meridian both in and out of work, the shift pattern was great for playing mid week golf and we did a few fun ski trips too, we shared a chalet with a bunch of westcountry farmers that called themselved the “Dirty Dozen” I can just about taste the Toffee Vodka thinking about it. Dave W and Richard O’Brien will remember the times we spent in the Mitsi (it was a Mistubishi something or other) going to Tottenham or Highbury to re-engineer their sudios, Nige always had a clear idea of the best way to do things.. and it always was, a lot of us learned a lot from him over the years.
We have kept in touch since leaving Meridian, never often enough, but that happens when we all have young families. Sadly it wasn’t until he failed to turn up for a get-together dinner that we discovered he was poorly. He was missed then and now will be always.
To Nigel with love from Rob, Nicky, Charlotte and Toby

Pete Love also sends his condolences.

  32. I had the pleasure of knowing Nigel and his cheerful, mischievous humour for about 40 years. From early days at Crawley Court (IBA) and subsequently at parties and get-togethers with mutual friends, we enjoyed numerous good conversations about cars (rotary and non-rotary Mazdas) , television engineering and life in general. I have many fond memories of competitive games and his strong sense of fun, deep-hearted kindness, and zest for life.

He will be much missed, and I send my deepest condolences to Nigel’s family.

    David Brockhurst
  33. My deepest condolence to you all at this difficult time. I have very fond memories of the stories Nigel recounted to me on the days of the week I worked at the Chilworth site, sharing desk space, or over lunch. You could always be assured that Nigel had an opinion, and we were happy to put the world to rights! I also enjoyed hearing about his daughter, he was very proud of her and cherished those moments they got to spend time together, whether it was skateboarding or watching a movie.
Nigel had considerable Broadcast experience and was always happy to lend me a guiding hand if I wanted things done properly – including folding my drawings! I am very pleased to have known Nigel, as a colleague, and as a friend. You will be missed.

    Alex Barnett
  34. I have very fond memories of Nigel from our school days and after when we all used to meet up at the chocolate box comparing our Ford cari cars. Messing around at weekends altogether. Nigel has been taken far too early and will be sadly missed. Sending our condolences to Nigels family at this very sad time.

    Simon Bingham
  35. Nigel was someone who always brought a smile to my face during our times at Meridian. He had a great sense of humour and was genuine and kind to all he met.
Later on we met a few times once I had left Meridian when he was working for TSL and other broadcast integrators and it was always a pleasure to see him 🙂
I wish my best wishes to his family and I feel lucky to have shared time with Nigel.

  37. Sending our deepest condolences at this very sad time. I worked with Nigel for many years at TVS & Meridian & found him to be intelligent, hard-working and a perfectionist, but also a fun guy to work alongside. You were always helpful & keen to share your knowledge. We spent many enjoyable lunchtimes in the crew room, chatting & putting the world to rights. We will miss you at our broadcasting reunions, but Barb & I will both have many happy memories of you in our hearts to treasure forever. Sleep well, Nigel.
    Fondest love from

  38. I’ve only just been made aware of Nigel’s passing – I’m not sure anyone will read this, but I wanted to send my condolences.

I met Nigel at 16 studying at college, and as part of a group of around 10 of us, we had a great time partying hard (regular nights at the Maison Royale!) and studying as little as we could get away with.

“Nige” as he was known later joined Penny & Giles, joining those of us working in the Electronics Department, where again his upbeat attitude, nicely balanced with a dry (and occasionally wicked!) sense of humour made the days fun. Many comments on here refer to his all round technical knowledge, helpfulness and deep seated kind nature… I particularly remember him stopping to help me when my car broke down on a busy roundabout.

I regret losing contact with him in recent years – he was one of the good guys and in many ways, we were very much on the same wavelength. I would have really enjoyed the opportunity to play the occasional round of golf with him.

Rest well Nige – and keep smiling.

    Graeme Jones
