Charlton Down are on the up

Newly-promoted Charlton Down Cricket Club won the Dorset Funeral Plan Cricket League team of the month award for May – after going straight to the top of the table.

The village outfit were last year promoted out of Division Five and won all their games in the opening month of this season.

Brothers Matt and Dan Stevens made telling contributions with the ball and Nick Voss and Jack Eveleigh scored plenty of runs.

Skipper Tommy Tucker said: “We have plenty of youngsters aged between 16 and 19 as well as a few older heads. We just let the younger ones get on with it and give them a bit of guidance where we can.

“After getting promoted we couldn’t have hoped for such a successful start to the new season. It’s been unbelievable.

“We are planning for the long term and we now have three level two coaches and more youngsters coming through.

“One day we also hope to build a small, indoor cricket centre.”

Peter Douch from the sponsors presented Tommy and club chairman Alex Campbell with a trophy, medals for all the team and a bottle of bubbly.

He said: “Charlton Down were winners of the award for the last month of 2015 and the first month of 2016 – they are certainly doing something right.

“It’s great to see the mix of younger and older players really enjoying their cricket.”
