Dorset funeral director welcomes regulation to protect families and raise standards
A leading Dorset funeral director has welcomed government plans to strengthen regulation of the funeral industry.
Nick Douch, Managing Director of Douch Family Funeral Directors, said proper regulation would help protect bereaved families from poor practice while supporting the many funeral directors who already work to high professional standards.
The move follows growing calls for stronger regulation of funeral directors in England after several disturbing cases involving the mistreatment of deceased people and poor standards of care.
Nick Douch, whose family business operates funeral branches across Dorset, said he welcomed any practical measures that would protect families and improve confidence in the profession.
“The majority of funeral directors are honest, caring and professional. They understand the responsibility that comes with looking after someone who has died and supporting the family left behind.
“But where poor practice exists, it damages public trust and causes enormous distress to families at the most vulnerable time in their lives. That is why I welcome proper regulation, provided it is practical, consistent and focused on maintaining dignity and standards.
“Those of us who act professionally and put families first have nothing to fear.”

Why regulation matters for families
Recent cases across England have highlighted the need for clearer standards in the funeral profession.
For families arranging a funeral, trust is everything. They need to know that the person who has died will be cared for with dignity, and that the funeral director they choose is acting professionally, transparently and responsibly.
Nick said funeral directors have a particular duty of care because families are often making important decisions at one of the most difficult times in their lives.
“These behaviours are bad enough in any industry, but dealing with those mourning the loss of a loved one gives funeral directors a much bigger responsibility.
“People at this time are vulnerable, and it is greatly upsetting to see any funeral director take advantage of that trust.”
Helping shape good inspection standards in Dorset
Douch Family Funeral Directors has already been involved in local work to support higher standards.
“We have already been working closely with local authorities in Dorset, having been selected as a pilot ‘champion’ to help build a picture of what good inspection standards should look like.
“That kind of collaboration is important. Regulation needs to be informed by people who understand the day-to-day reality of funeral care.
“It must protect families, maintain dignity for the deceased and give the public confidence in the services they receive.”
