  1. Dear Grandad,

You were the best Grandad we ever could have asked for. We loved catching up with you at the weekends, hearing about your week, and telling you what we’d been doing. You loved watching our music performances from school, especially our Jazz Band performances – we’ll always think of you now when we’re playing. We loved the way you sung to us and paid attention to everything we said, and we loved you laughing at our silly faces and bad jokes.

You were the most loving, kind, generous and supportive Grandad. We have so many lovely memories from when we stayed with you at Spy House a few years ago, and we will remember and treasure these forever.

We will also miss your cakes, they were the best we have ever tasted, especially your carrot cake.

Thank you for being the best Grandad, we were so lucky to have you in our lives. We couldn’t have asked for a better Grandad.

We will love and miss you forever, dear Grandad.

    Lots and lots of love,

    Leni and Lucas

  2. Dear Jack,

Thank you for being such a loving father-in-law. You were so kind, so generous and so thoughtful, and it was an honour to be a part of your family. I can only hope to raise the next generation of Smiths as well as you did.

You will be missed deeply forever, but thank you for leaving us with such wonderful memories.

Rest in Peace with Janet and my lovely Pete,

  5. Darling dad, you are part of the stars again now, but your legacy of love lives on. I am so sorry about all the heartbreak and difficulties you faced in your later years, but you always saw the gold and despite everything would always say how lucky you had felt in your life, to be loved, for all the joy, and to have had us all in your lives. You will always be our wise and wonderful teacher in this way. We became a little double act, didn’t we, and I will miss this, the many moments crying with laugher, and being by your side each step of the way. We love you, Kathryn and Jamie xxx

  6. Jack you were a lovely Brother-in-law. Sam fondly remembers your ruse to keep him out of the garage at Spy House by telling him you kept a tiger in there. You will be greatly missed and never forgotten. Love John and Sam

  7. My dear cousin Jack,
You were the most caring, compassionate and non-judgemental of people. We shared many happy times together, memories of which will stay with us forever. Be at peace now as you ‘have slipped the surly bonds of earth and danced the skies on laughter-silvered wings.’

  9. Dear Jack,
We knew each other for 2 years at Maidment Court and you were always a good friend to me. After you moved to Lindsay Care home nearly one year ago you were greatly missed by everyone here. We spoke on the phone a few times and it was good to know you were happy and well looked after. You would often be heard quietly singing in the corridors and on your way to the Activity room. We know how much you loved the Choir “Rising Voices”
May you rest in peace now Jack, my good friend and “upstairs” neighbour.

    Audrey.
  10. Our dear friend Jack

  11. Dear Jack,
You worked for my Dad all those years ago and became a friend especially to me.
When in England I would come and visit you at Maidment Court. It wasn’t very often but you always appreciated a visit.
We would go for a walk in the park opposite, once we went for lunch together .You insisted on paying. What a gentleman you were!
We talked non stop, me probably more than you! Jack you were a good listener and wanted to hear my news and how my girls were getting on.
One of my fondest memories is when you came over to Germany for my 50th Birthday Party.I know you enjoyed yourself, in your Thank-you letter you called me the Altenahr
„Party Queen“and you mentioned how happy you were to have been here and included in the celebration, you also told me that you had forgotten what it was like to have so much fun!
So happy you accepted that Invite!🎉🍾👏
I feel so sad yet so privileged to have known you Jack, a very kind, loving and gentle man, who will be greatly missed.
    RIP Jack 🌠
Lots of love Debra, Marco, Natalie and Katie.

  13. Lovely, kind-hearted Jack, what a star. From the countless times you welcomed all of Kathryn and Peter’s friends into your home over the decades, for parties and sleepovers and meals and so much shared laughter and fun, to the days you smiled through your own tears of loss to help others through their grief, you shone as a husband, a father, a grandfather and a friend to many. I will remember you singing unselfconsciously around Spy House, offering G&Ts and taxi rides before a night out (and paracetamols the next morning!), caring about others – always asking us about our families and being so rightly proud of yours. I enjoyed your enduring sense of mischief and good humour despite the hard times, and your gentle teasing when I needed those paracetamols! You’ll be missed, Jack Smith, so much. Big love to everyone who loved you. XXXX

  16. We are so sad to learn of the passing of dear Jack. A true and loyal friend to so many and always a gentleman, but with a very cheeky humour. We remember him fondly and are thinking of the many good times we have shared.

Those we love remain with us
    For love itself lives on,
    And cherished memories never fade
    Because a loved one’s gone.
Those we love can never be
    More than a thought apart,
Far as long as there is memory,
They’ll live on in the heart.

  17. Jack you were a wonderful friend to have had for all those years.

Although tinged with sadness, we are enjoying much happiness looking back and remembering. Especially our walks both home and abroad with you and Janet. So many laughs, sometimes at the most silly things but that’s what good friends do.

  23. I am so grateful, dear Jack, for all the happy times we have had together, ever since Janet brought you to see Peter and I and introduced you as her future husband! What a wonderful friend you turned out to be, and what great times we have had over the years, whenever we met, and especially with all those beautiful holidays in Cornwall and France. Thank you for everything, you will be missed more than I can say, Love, Beryl

  24. If there is one characteristic of Jack that I recognised, in the more than 50 years I knew him, was that he was always doing something for someone; be it baking a cake, watering flowers, taking people for appointments – you name it, he did it. Including helping my mother.

However, there was one good turn that really illustrates who Jack was. At one time he was commuting to work by car from Lytchett to Weymouth. It was wintertime and Jack noticed the same two children waiting for the Weymouth bus each day. Typical of him, he contacted their mother and offered to drop them off in the morning particularly in the cold weather. He did this for the time he worked in Weymouth. Even driving to work, he managed to help someone!!

So, what can I say, both Jack and Janet were very special people – it was a privilege to know them. God bless, Jack.

  26. Many of my memories of Jack are from our teenage years – he was always so jolly and never seemingly phased by giggling teenage girls from picking us up from the BIC after our first ‘proper’ concert (Wham!) or from the under 18’s nights at the Academy. Spy House holds many happy memories of good times and always a warm welcome.
What a lovely kind hearted and gentle man Jack was & we have all been blessed with him being in our lives.
May you rest in peace Jack. xxx

  27. What lovely photos, all those memories.
Jack had a great sense of humor – he took delight in telling the members of the choir we belonged to that having taken him home one night, I opened the door of the car and he stepped out, into a large puddle!
I regret not being able to spend time with Jack in this last year.
    Always the gentleman.
    We will all miss you.

  28. Dear Jack,
We wish to thank you for the many lovely times we all had together, especially at St Mellion Golf and Country Club, at our timeshare in Cornwall. You used to go on the driving range before you arrived so that you could play well – and you always did!!!
You were always kind and generous and had so many tough moments in later life, especially when you lost your dear son followed by darling Janet. Now you are reunited with them and all of you watching over us and maybe our Fiona has joined you all.
We will never forget you and Janet – please rest in peace and thank you for all the love and kindness
    you shared with us.

  41. Dear Jack

I got to know you through my friendship with Janet, with whom I worked for many years at Bournemouth University. You always had a smile, a joke, some friendly words, whenever we met. Over the years, I saw how you, as a family, stood strong through tragedy, first losing Peter and then Janet. When you took up singing with the choir, I was so glad that you had found something that gave you hope, friendship and support. You welcomed me into your home on many occasions and the last time we met, before you moved house, we had lunch together and talked over many things. I will always remember your warmth and kindness to me and to my daughter, Ruth, Kathryn’s mate from schooldays.

Rest easy, Jack. I’ll think of you often – You and Janet were a team!

Jack was also once the Italian dapper ‘Don’ in one of our fancy dress ‘mystery dinner’ capers, he played the part so fittingly to his nature.
