Urn Sizes: 4 Tips To Help You Find The Right Urns For Ashes

The death of a loved one is never easy, especially with all the decisions that are left to the families. Selecting the right urn for ashes is one of those difficult decisions that can become quite a struggle without any guidance. Cremation urns are now available in a range of styles, such as water urns and scatter tube for ashes. In fact, many families now choose to turn their ashes into jewellery to hold their loved ones close. If you have settled on a cremation urn, read our tips below to ensure you are selecting the right urn for you.

1. Consider the size of your urn

The average volume of an adult cremated remains is 3 – 3.5 litres. Many cremation urns will state the volume of  ashes that it can hold. Alternatively, the product may simply state it is suitable for an adult quantity. Despite this, it is important to consider that designer urns may differ in sizes where they are handmade to order.

2. Do you plan to share or combine the ashes?

It is not uncommon for families to share the ashes out amongst those closest to the deceased. This will reduce the volume of ashes left for your cremation urn and could mean a small or medium urn would be more appropriate.  Another common practice is to use one urn to combine the ashes of two people. This is often seen in couples where families choose for their remains to be combined. For this, there are some adult urns that are built to hold the remains of two, sometimes known as a Duo Urn.

3. Displaying the urn

Do you intend on having the urn displayed as a piece of art? Designer urns are often out in the open with the intention of serving as a sculptural piece of art. These urns will differ in size depending on the design.  There are a range of styles available to ensure you can find the cremation urn that represents your loved one.

4. Budget

Budget will have an impact on which urn is right for you. If you have limited budget, a more simple, small urn may be the best direction. There are plenty of affordable options available that have a symbolic design to ensure of a peaceful resting place. Those with a larger budget have the benefit of being open to larger, designer urns. These urns are often made using high quality materials and skilled manufacturing processes. The most important thing is that you pick a cremation urn that is right for you.
